Wrekin 8’s Indoor League: Wellington vs Shifnal

David Ross10 Oct - 13:26

09 October 2025 | Wrekin College

The Wrekin 8’s Indoor League got back into action last night as Wellington took on defending champions Shifnal in this season’s opening game. With new faces, fresh energy, and plenty of nerves, the team took its first steps into the fast-paced chaos that is indoor cricket.
For those unfamiliar with the format, indoor cricket isn’t your usual summer afternoon at the crease. It’s six players a side, eight overs each, and a whole new set of rules that keep everyone on their toes. Hit the roof? You’re out. Onto the balcony? Out. Smash the side wall only to be caught? You guessed it, out again. And with a hard, rubberised ball and bowlers limited to just two overs each, rhythm and reflexes are everything.
Wellington batted first and posted a respectable 86 for 5, led brilliantly by Josh McDonald, who anchored the innings with a classy 43 not out. Every run was hard-earned, every shot a gamble, but the debutants settled in well and showed real composure against one of the league’s most seasoned line-ups.
In reply, Shifnal’s experience showed, but not without resistance. Wellington’s bowlers took things deep into the seventh over, refusing to roll over. Newcomer Anudeep Muppidi impressed on debut, showing great control and promise with the ball. Despite their efforts, Wellington fell short, but the signs of what’s to come this season were all there: energy, teamwork, and a fighting spirit.
With the cobwebs well and truly shaken off, Wellington now turn their sights to Grasshoppers on November 23rd.
