Youth Progression At Wellington CC In 2021 Simon Topper updates us on the takeaways from a recent Zoom session with Al Taylor.

February 16, 2021 News

A group of Under 14-19 boys joined Al Taylor on Zoom last Thursday to listen to him speaking about young players progressing at Wellington CC. Al has been the second XI captain for the past two years and was able to share his thoughts on the qualities needed to play cricket at the top end of the Shropshire League. Key messages included an enthusiastic hard working attitude, good communication skills, the ability to listen and act upon advice and the ability to win games for adult teams.

Our Saturday and Sunday adult teams include a high proportion of Under 19 players with captains ensuring that all players get to perform their primary skill in every game and with thought given to developing our youngsters in a variety of match situations. With selection depending on a variety of criteria, our young players are encouraged to be patient, concentrate on performing consistently well and be available when opportunities are presented. As well as being keen to progress to the higher teams, Al emphasised the importance of enjoying the game and building a good rapport with fellow team mates of all ages.

With an increasing number of young players coming through our youth section the club are looking to do more to support the transition to adult cricket for all players whether they have been identified to benefit from our Academy set up or not.  Any Under 19 playing adult cricket can arrange weekly feedback from the relevant captain and are encouraged to attend Thursday net sessions with agreed focus areas to work on and seek support from more experienced players. Opportunities also exist to represent Wellington in the Shropshire T20 Under 19 League, playing a handful of competitive matches within the same age range, under the watchful eye of club captain Matt Stinson.

Under 15 players will benefit this season from the return to the Wellington CC coaching team of Duncan Taylor who will run Under 15 training and matches on a weekly basis. For those Under 16 and above the club is soon to publish a list of Level 2 coaches who will make themselves available this season to offer 1-1 support for those that seek additional coaching. A coaching fee will apply.

When the Covid 19 restrictions are eased we are all keen to get the 2021 season underway and are looking forward to working with all of our young players across all ability levels.
