Weekly Round-Up: 27th May

Weekend Summary

The Bank Holiday weekend started well for Wellington, who secured the first win of their Birmingham League campaign with a nerve-jangling one-wicket success over Old Hill. The 2nd XI’s match at Newtown also involved late drama, but this time Wellington slipped to defeat off the penultimate ball of the game. The 3rd and 4th team continue to struggle with the bat and their inconstinency cost them in home and away fixtures against Frankwell. On Sunday, the 5th travelled to Shrewsbury, but the stormy weather saw that game abandoned after just five overs. Finally, on Monday, the 1st XI completed a perfect weekend with a four-wicket defeat over bottom-side Bridgnorth.

PerformanCE of the Weekend

Dan Lloyd’s 5-21 versus Old Hill on Saturday set up the 1st XI’s first win of the season, helping his team to dismiss the opposition for just 132.

Ish Vidyasankar took 4-20 in a losing cause for the 4th XI – a very tidy spell from the rapidly improving left-armer.

Honourable Mentions

  • Matt Simmonds (39 off 98 balls) was the glue that held the team together in a nervy low-scoring match.

Elsewhere In The Club

  • President’s Day on Sunday was sadly cut-short by the local storms, which was a real shame, especially with players travelling so far to play. There was however a good turnout from sponsors for the day and everyone appeared to have a good time, despite the lack of cricket!
  • Wellington Ladies got their season off to a good start at home to Wem where they picked up a 47 run win. There were two wickets each for impressive youngsters Sophia Parton and Seline Mendis.
  • Mixed news in the cups! The 2nd XI are out of the Hundred knockout, losing to Worfield on Tuesday; however the Wildcats advanced in the Midweek Presidents’ Cup, defeating Alberbury in short order.
  • Wellington’s two U15 sides were in action in their first league matches on Monday. The Stags overcame Newport by 75 runs; whilst the Colts were edged out by Forton. Ollie Mee hit an unbeaten 50 for the Stags, and Matt Marshall 32 for the Colts.
  • And finally, our Incrediball U11 team played Forton on Sunday morning in what was many of them their first ever game of cricket. It was great to see the enthusiasm of the next generation!

Looking Forward

  • We have two fixtures at the club on Saturday – the 2nd XI vs Lilleshall and the 3rd XI vs Montgomery – followed by Caribbean food (from 6pm) and a Quiz night (from 8pm). All welcome – come and join us!
  • We have a friendly at home to Church Stretton on Sunday so anyone who is interested in playing, please contact Paul Willis on 07412 503135.
  • Wednesday night sees all three of our U13 teams in action, two at Orleton Park. They have been really unlucky with the weather for their fixtures this year, so hopefully the games can go ahead!
