Week 16: Wellington Advance After Preston Win

August 8, 2023 News

After a complete washout of all local cricket on Saturday, Sunday’s forecast was much improved and Wellington were able to make their long trip north to face Preston Cricket Club in Lancashire in the first round of the ECB Vitality T20 Plate competition.

Being inserted by their hosts in trying conditions, skipper Dan Lloyd glued the innings together with 42 runs at the top of the card. Support came in the form of Will Lewin (38) and Wendell Wagner (15) and Wellington ascended to a defendable score of 125-7 in their 20 overs. Early wickets from Steve Brooks and Lewin piled pressure on the Preston line-up, before Lloyd (2-19) and Wagner (1-17) intervened to put the opposition well behind the rate. As the home side strived for the boundaries they needed, Dinesh Perera picked up 3-25 and helped close the game out for Wellington, who picked up a 26-run win.

Wellington now progress to the northern finals day at Elsecar CC in Yorkshire on Sunday 27th August where they will face Cawthorne CC in the first semi-final.

Elsewhere on Sunday, the 5th XI had a great away win against St Georges IV. The team batted first and notched up an impressive 225-7 in their 40 overs. Krish Singh was the star with 65 for the visitors, who also enjoyed handy contributions from Dave Good (33), Mark Downes (35), and Tushar Jani (33). Singh Junior then took two wickets for no runs, whilst dad Kumar claimed 3-13, as Wellington dismissed their Telford rivals for 152.
