Week 14: 5ths Lose Out In Only Game Of Wet Weekend

July 24, 2023 News

Saturday’s bad weather decimated the schedule across the county and led to the abandonment of all four of Wellington’s scheduled league matches. Sunday’s friendly against Grasshoppers, also fell victim to the weather.

As such, only the 5th XI home match against Oswestry went ahead across the weekend. Wellington put in a decent showing in the first innings, posting a total of 190 all out with three balls of their 40 overs left. Mark Downes held the card together with 96 before he was run out late on. Jay Downes (21) and Pradeep Pandurangan (18) were the other chief scorers for the home team. Unfortunately for Wellington, Oswestry’s Max Lloyd was also in good form, hitting an unbeaten 101 before retiring not out. The border side were chasing the target comfortably on 180-1 but lost four wickets for zero runs late on with Downes Junior picking up 3-39. However, Wellington’s fightback came too late and Oswestry ran out winners by five wickets.
