Festival Showing Highlights Progress By Wellington Girls

By coach Simon Topper

Wellington girls under 11 and under 13 teams had a wonderful day of cricket at the county cricket festival hosted at Wroxeter CC on Sunday.

The previous two festivals had fallen victim to the rain but on Sunday the sun shone and so did the Wellington girls. First up were the under 11 team which contained 3 out of the 6 players playing their first ever competitive matches. The girls won 2 of the 3 games played making notable improvements in all aspects of the game as the morning went on. In particular they showed a great team spirit and a real enthusiasm for the game. Particularly well done to Seline who captained the team and took a vital wicket in the last over of the final game.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the Under 13 girls with Wellington able to host two teams mixing under 11, 12 and 13 across both teams. The girls were very competitive from the off with some great hitting with the bat from Sophie Williams catching the eye. A narrow defeat in the first game for the team captained by Rebecca was followed by two great wins with strong bowling and excellent fielding throughout. The team captained by Olivia managed to win all three games with some brilliant cricket. Kaylah Pryce led the way opening the bowling and batting in each game and was well supported by her team mates who all made valuable contributions. However, none were as significant as the skipper Olivia in a very close game with Brewood CC. In the final over she cleaned bowled the opposition’s strongest batters no less than four times to pull off a fantastic victory for the team.

A special mention to Beth Taylor who played really well for the under 11 team in the morning and then stepped up for the under 13’s in the afternoon when we found ourselves one short. Six games left her suitably exhausted but still with a smile on her face.

Finally, on behalf of the girls and parents a big thank you to this season’s shirt sponsors Wilson Heat Pumps for ensuring all the girls have a team shirt and to our cap sponsor The STEM Workshop for keeping the sun out of the girls’ eyes.

The growing girls squad (now 33 players) look forward to the final festival of the season on 5 September and the club are looking to arrange some additional hardball and softball friendly fixtures later this month.

Well done to all the Wellington girls this season for training hard, making great improvements and most importantly playing with a smile on your face.
