Boys U11 Cricket At Wellington In 2023

We just wanted to provide you with an update regarding junior cricket for boys in School Years 4, 5 and 6 in 2023.

Following feedback from coaches and parents last year, it was apparent that the children who previously were split across two age groups – our U11s and U10s – varied widely in experience, ability and physical development.

It was therefore decided that the boys would be better served by being split into groups based on their current playing level regardless of their age.

This is intended to have several benefits. It will better encourage and develop U10 players who are ready to progress to hardball cricket; and it will provide a way for Under 11s who would benefit from development in a softball environment.

As such, it is our intention to form two squads from this cohort – the Wolves and the Foxes.

The Wolves will mostly train with a hard cricket ball and will compete in the regional hardball league. The head coach for the Wolves will be Luke Goring. Selection for league matches will be predominantly based on merit, ie. the coach will look to select the best team to win the match. There will however be some rotation of players to provide opportunities to play for all.

The Foxes will train with a soft ball and will compete in friendlies, interclub matches, and the popular local festivals to develop their skills. The head coach for the Foxes will be Ben Pilkington.

The squads will be decided when summer training resumes in April and the squads will not be exclusive. When the coaches judge it appropriate and safe, boys from the Foxes will move up to the Wolves.

Wellington’s summer junior programme will begin on Monday 17th April and we will have further information about this available over the next couple of weeks. However, if you wish to enrol your child now, this can be done so, here.
