Wellington Ease Into Quarters
The 3rd team progressed to the quarter final stage of the SCCL T20 knockout after a comfortable win over Hodnet on Thursday.
Competition rules state that only players who have played in the league are able to compete in this cup competition. This was a little unfair on Hodnet, who have only fielded 13 players this season. With some missing due to work commitments, they only had nine players eligible players for this encounter.
Wellington won the toss, inserted their visitors and got off to a good start. Jonathan Black claimed a wicket in each of his three opening overs. There were also one wicket apiece for Jack Fishman, David Ross and Ben Pilkington, but in general the bowling performance was below-par. Hodnet's total was bolstered by 30 extras - a lot in just 18 overs.
Matthew Dickenson took 2 for 6 to bring the innings to a close on 89 for 8, leaving Wellington with a small chase on a good wicket.
Wellington never looked in trouble. Richard Benting looked in good form as he notched up an unbeaten 49 with able support from Corey Kernick (14) and Matthew Dickenson (11*). The one sour note in the evening was the fact that Tugboat missed out on his fifty after Dicko smashed a six to win the game, leaving his partner high and dry.
The 3rd team move on the quarter final stage after maintaining their 100% record in league and cup this term.
