Too Hot At Smethwick
The First XI found the home side and the conditions too hot to handle as they crashed to a disappointing 95-run defeat at Smethwick.
Sent in to bat the home side rattled up 250-8 in their 55 overs, opening bat Hooper leading the way with 73.
Best bowler and a hugely encouraging sign for the future was the performance of young Dan Lloyd, who took 3-76 in 17 overs. The 15-year-old, recently chosen to represent the Midlands at the Bunbury Festival, turned in a great spell in batsmen-friendly conditions.
He bowled in tandem with another left arm, spinner – although a little older – as Adam Byram took 2-74 in his 17, his figures spoilt by the last three deliveries of the innings which went for 16 runs.
There were also two wickets for Gagandeep Singh but Wellington faced a tall order, despite getting off to a rapid start with 33 coming off the first three overs. It was, however, downhill after that as they slumped to 155 all out, Ross Aucott top scoring with 33.
Only consolation was that they gained four points on rivals Shifnal as this Saturday’s opponents were bundled out for 69 by leaders Dorridge.
