Back To Winning Ways
The 1sts got back on the right track with their 3rd win in the opening 5 league fixtures – one of which was rained off – to maintain their title push.
Wellington are equal third in the First Division table and will be looking to close the gap on unbeaten leaders Dorridge when they entertain bottom of the table Barnards Green on Saturday.
Sent in to bat on a damp Orleton Park pitch the home side soon lost openers Steve Lamb and Neil Edwards, but once again Joe Clarke showed great maturity with another superb half century.
He eventually fell for 64, skipper Wendell Wagner hit 20 and Wellington’s total was also boosted by 38 extras, mostly wides, delivered by the Leamington attack. The all out total then got another lift as the umpires added a further 12 runs due to the visitors’ slow over rate.
Leamington now needed 202 for victory and were never in the hunt, despite Wellington being without the services of key bowler Gangandeep Singh, who was resting an injured side.
Wendell struck two early blows in a game which became too aggressive for some people’s liking, not least the umpires. Leamington were eventually dismissed for 143 in 41 overs with the skipper taking 3-24 from 8.4 overs, well backed up by Adam Byram, Neil Edwards and Ross Aucott with two wickets apiece.
