Wellington Ladies Taste Victory For First Time

By

The newly formed Wellington Ladies Cricket team enjoyed their first win of the season on Tuesday evening with a superb win against an experienced Sentinal team.

As part of the clubs drive to improve opportunities for girls and ladies we entered a team in a very competitive Active Women’s League at the start of the season. A squad has been assembled by captain Hannah Young and has been training hard as a group on Monday evening alongside the Under11/13 girls squad who are also competing in fixtures this season. In their first three games the ladies have been developing their skills and match awareness and whilst competitive, have found the opposition a little too strong. Over recent weeks the ladies have been making regular use of the nets during the week and at weekends and the hard worked paid off with a brilliant performance against Sentinal.

Losing the toss and being asked to bat first the Wellington Ladies applied themselves exceptionally well and all four pairs accumulated a healthy total and importantly not one Wellington wicket was taken. The innings finished with an excellent 88 runs scored.

The strong batting performance clearly gave the ladies confidence and led to a top notch bowling and fielding effort. Wellington were able to take eight Sentinal wickets with all the bowlers taking a wicket each. The bowlers were backed up by some inspired fielding resulting in some impressive catching and two superb run outs. Sentinal were able to make 82 runs during their innings but with the loss of those eight wickets this was reduced to 42 runs giving the Wellington Ladies an impressive victory.

It's great to see our girls/ladies representing the club and four of the team have also represented the club in both the men’s and junior boys teams already this season. Well done in particular to Hannah Young for the leadership she is showing and we look forward to encouraging more ladies and girls to join in and for more success to follow.
