Sisters* Are Doing It For Themselves

*and Moms

Wellington Senior Ladies team kept up their 100% record in this year’s Active Women’s League last Tuesday with an impressive win at Oreleton Park against a strong Whitchurch outfit.

It was a family affair on Tuesday with the McGowan, Hide and Eatough sisters all in the line up together with our first mother and daughter paring of Clarice and Jen Doyle also included.

With skipper Eatough Snr (Katharine) losing the toss we fielded first in this pair’s format game so went into the game with a tactic of knocking over early and regular wickets to keep the Whitchurch score pegged back. The tactic worked perfectly with a fine all round bowling display with notable performances from Rachel Eatough bowling a fantastic length to get 3 for 5, Beth McGowan coming in off a shorter run up but still generating pace to end with impressive figures of 2 for 1 and Katharine also bowling with pace to get 2 for 9. Other wickets were shared around between Emma Hide, Rachael McGowan and Deenah Ahsan. The regular clatter of wickets resulted in Whitchurch totalling just 224 from a starting point of 200 to leave us with a great chance of winning the game.

Speaking before our innings we discussed the importance of valuing our wickets and batting sensibly. This proved the right way to win the game with just 4 wickets falling in our 20 overs.

Our first pair of Sarah Hide and Rachael McGowan gave us just the platform we needed by not losing any wickets during their 4 over stint. It’s great to see Sarah returning from the injury that has curtailed her appearances this season. Sarah was a mainstay of both our Under 13 and Active Women’s teams last year and having her back has added more strength to our squad due to her undoubted talent.

Next up saw mother and daughter pairing Jen and Clarice Doyle at the crease. Against county U13 bowling they both defended resolutely through their 4 overs with Clarice finally unlucky to get caught off their final ball. However, this pairing pushed us to within 1 run of the target with 12 overs remaining so this was a key pairing and a fine effort.

Beth McGowan and Rachel Eatough strode out next and continued the good work. Again, ensuring minimal wickets were lost and picking off the bad balls, we continued to accumulate runs. Rachel, buoyed by her brilliant bowling display, beautifully drove one ball through the covers for four to keep the scoreboard ticking over and leaving us on 237 after 12 overs.

The ‘senior’ pairing of Katharine Eatough and Emma Hide were next up and this pairing effectively saw us over the line. Batting with tenacity the girls played positively to take the game away from Whitchurch with Emma especially in good form smashing boundaries on her way to 14 not out.

With the score now on 259 and the final pairing of wickie Ellie Micklewright and Deenah to come we knew there was license to play positively. With the pairing up against their County U13 bowling colleagues it was a tough challenge but, despite losing a couple of wickets, the girls took the attack to the opposition with Ellie’s pull for 6 a real highlight. As the final over came to a close the girls had pushed the score on to 263 for a comfortable victory.

So an impressive all round display from the girls with us professional in all areas (fielding, wicket-keeping, captaining, bowling and batting). It was especially pleasing to see the girls now take on adult opposition with no qualms and beating them comfortably showing how we continue to develop as a side.
Well done ladies – let’s keep the 100% record going.
