WELLINGTON CRICKET CLUB, ORLETON PARK, WELLINGTON, TELFORD, SHROPSHIRE. Wellington Cricket Club was founded in 1947 and so has over 50 years of history. The main aim of the club is to provide the best cricket facilities in the county for players of any age or ability. Wellington currently play in the 1st Division of the Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League having been relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2007 season. The club had gained promotion from the First Division in 2002. Wellington CC gained promotion from the Shropshire Cricket League at the end of the 1998 season. The club finished fifth in the first two seasons played in the Birmingham league. During these two seasons Wellington has played matches against some big Birmingham League clubs, Aston Unity who had Wasim Akram as club pro for the 2000 season, Leamington who has Wayne Larkin as club pro and Knowle & Dorridge who had Gladstone Small. Following promotion Wellington CC won the division at the first attempt and subsequently successfully defended the title the following year. In 2003 Wellington appointed Australian Chris "Buck" Rogers as the clubs first ever pro. After helping Wellington to the title at the first attempt, Chris then went on to play county cricket for Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Northants and after another highly successful season in Australia in 2006/2007 he made his debut in January 2008 in the Australian Test team when called up as a late replacement for the injured Matthew Hayden. Wellington have completed the signing of Indian ace Rajit Bhatia as professional for the 2008 season. Bhatia, a big hit for Newport over the last two seasons, has also had a brilliant season back in India this winter with a result that he has been called up to play in the new Indian Premier League for Delhi DareDevils captained by Icon player Virender Sehwag. This is great news for Raj but no so good for the club as he will miss the first five league games plus two Williamson cup games. Wellington's second team play in reserve division two of the Birmingham League. This is proving to be an excellent learning ground for some of the young up and coming players. As well as having two teams playing in the Birmingham League, Wellington also have two teams playing in the Shropshire League. The thirds and fourths play in divisions two and five respectively of Shropshire League, both teams having gained promotion at the end of the 2006 season. This spread of teams over a wide range means that Wellington can offer cricket to players of all ages and abilities and indeed new members of any ability are always welcome. The development of youth is seen as being very important at Wellington. Youth coaching takes place throughout the season and caters for the 9 to 16 age groups. Full details on our youth page. So why not come down and join us in the pavilion for some great cricket. Details on how to contact the club's officials can be found on the contacts page.
