On July 5th and 6th, 1978 Shropshire played Surrey.

The report in Wisden was as follows:

On a difficult pitch Shropshire had little to offer once a difiant and skilful opening partnership had been spilt. Slade, the former Worcestershire bowler, toiled until after lunch, but against professional bowling the later batsmen found that attacking was a fruitless pusuit. Surrey also had their troubles, but Edrich, the Man of the Match, was in his element for almost three hours, hitting ten 4's through the soggy outfield. Roope, slightly out of touch, stayed while the bulk of the runs were made.
