Curtain Falls On 2017 Season

2 months ago By David Ross

Wellington completed the 2017 campaign with two impressive Shropshire League victories on the final weekend.

It was the 3rd team who took centre-stage at Orleton Park on Saturday after the 1st and 2nd XIs wrapped up their seasons a week ago. Ellesmere were the visitors for the final fixture of the season and were inserted by home skipper David Ross after losing the toss. Opener Ryan Fernando (2-13) got his team off to a good start with the new ball, before Ross (3-16) and Muhammed Wasif (3-14) laid waste to the middle order. After turning in one of their best bowling displays of the season, Wellington dismissed Ellesmere for just 94. After tea, the opening pair of Luke Goring (40) and Warwick Vaughan (32) put on a solid first stand which provided the platform for a seven-wicket victory. The win secured a ninth-place finish in Shropshire Division Two.

The 4th team, who won the Reserve Division Two title last weekend, made the long journey to Newtown on the final Saturday of the season. Batting first, they found themselves humbled after being bowled out for just 62. The Powys side lost a wicket with the first ball of the second innings, before ascending to their target for a nine-wicket finish without incurring further damage. Despite that final-day thrashing, Wellington won the league by 25 points and will compete in Reserve Division One next term.

On Sunday, the 2017 season had one more success in store for Wellington as Richard Atherden’s 5th team made the trip to face Bomere Heath III. The visitors batted first and made 162-8. Young batsman Elliott Byram hit 29 and Michael Francis added an unbeaten 25 as Wellington posted a challenging total. Akhil Srinivasan (3-12) and Harrison Coalbran (2-9) did the damage in the second innings as Bomere Heath were dismissed for just 51. The win led the 5ths to a fourth-place finish in Sunday Division One after a solid campaign.
