4ths Continue Promotion Push

8 months ago By David Ross

Simon Topper's team have their eyes set on promotion after registering a ninth win of the season at Willey.

Wellington 1sts went down to a heavy defeat on the road at Barnards Green on Saturday. In the first innings, the hosts notched up an imposing total of 251 for 9 as George Rhodes hit a smart 99 and Phil Harris added 74. Wellington opener Jack Twigger was again amongst the wickets, claiming 5 for 49. However, it was an afternoon on which his teammates struggled to contain a strong batting card. In reply, Sam Lloyd hit 52 at the top of the order and skipper Wendell Wagner scored 40, but there was little in the way of support for them as Wellington were bowled out for 138.

The 2nd team earned a commendable home draw against second-placed Penkridge. Alex Taylor (42) and Matt Denver (47) put Wellington in the driving seat with a strong second-wicket stand, before Matt Stinson (47*) excelled down the order. Their efforts helped the home team to a good score of 223 for 8. Three wickets for Owais Abdul and two each for Martin Weill, Dan Ashton and Stinson propelled Wellington to the verge of victory, but once again the last wicket alluded them. Penkridge finished on 182 for 9.

The 3rd team match against Prees was conceded by the opposition, so it was the 4th team left flying the flag for Wellington in the Shropshire League on Saturday afternoon. They travelled to Willey looking to keep their promotion challenge on track. Bowling first, Wellington contained the hosts to 145 in their 40 overs. Kumar Singh, Andy Parkyn and Sam Jones claimed two wickets each in a good all-round bowling display. After tea, Simon Topper’s team chased their target down to earn a six-wicket win with opener Sean Ward Clayton (53) leading from the front.

The 5th team earned maximum points as they welcomed Bomere Heath to Orleton Park on Sunday. They posted a total of 163 for 7 in their 40 overs as most batters contributed for the hosts. Three wickets each for Jason Whitley and Adam Byram after tea steered Wellington to a 35-run victory.

Elsewhere, the 6th team went down to a nine-wicket defeat at Pontesbury. Matt Earley (32) and Jordan Keeble (27) provided well over half of their side’s meagre total of 106. Wellington could only claim on wicket in the second innings courtesy of Haris Ali as the hosts romped home in the 21st over.
