Gough Drops Cure In Low Scoring Affair

It was a traditionally cold start to the season across at the former Reman Services, now Sentinel club in Shrewsbury.

By Kevin Vaughan

Despite the ever-present threat of rain, the storm clouds stayed at bay long enough to get a game in and it was the visiting side that reaped the rewards thanks to an excellent display from serial pitch-forker, Lewis Gough.

Gough, who spends many an afternoon on the hallowed turf at Moleneux, must have despaired to see the softness in the outfield, where standing in place too long required someone to pull you out like some sort of task on Takeshi’s Castle. Despite this, the traditional 10 minutes of lobbing an American football around then 20 minute Martin Fears pro fielding warm-up lead to the inevitable. Early’s side were thrown in to bat on the pudding.

Team Lothario and all round ladies man Alex Brasenall was soon sent back to the pavilion out of luck, although this gave him plenty of time to work on his Tinder game.’ Whilst he was attempting several ‘Netflix and Chills’ Martin Fears was starting to build an innings with adrian casey. Wellington soon fell to 28-2 when Casey edge to slip probably thankful to be out of the middle as the chirpy Sentinel side went about their business sledging more than watching Cool Running’s on the Cresta Run. Vaughan didn’t take to Kindly to the comments in the middle and despite a few rash shots that might have seen him back in the hutch on another day, survived to make 27 before being bowled by Cheshire. Fearsy at this point was anchoring the innings but a middle order collapse left Wellington what they felt was 40-50 short of a competitive total at 76-7. Up stepped the partnership of Lewis Gough (32) and Cam Watson (19) who played some fantastic technical cricket to nurse the ball around the park where value for runs was minimal. With support at the end from Rich Atherden and Jase Whitely, Wellington’s second wind managed to get them up to a very healthy 147-9 off their 40 overs.

In Reply, Sentinel found runs hard to come by with Whitely and Watson opening up with a tight bowling partnership. The scoreboard pressure started to build and regular wickets fell. When Gough came on to bowl, he ripped through the middle and lower order registering figures of 5-12 from 8 overs which resulted in the hosts being all out for 70, cementing a strong opening performance for the 5’s who follow up this game with a home game against Alderbury on Sunday.
