Brooksy Says Four-well

Steve Brooks took the final wicket in the 2nd team's win at Coventry as he played his last game for the club.

Match report by Steve Moules

An early start was needed on Saturday for the 2nds trip to Coventry and North Warwickshire. Skipper Steve Moules had sorted an eight-seater to take the majority of the team, and all the kit, to the game; so there was just Stints that he had to worry about not getting lost en route!

The journey alone was eventful enough. Dan Candlish had devised an alternative route to avoid the V Festival traffic - which, to his credit, it did! Unfortunately for Dan he was feeling, shall we say, "travel sick" and an emergency stop was required in order to relieve himself the previous night's drinking.

Soon enough we were back on the road, arriving at the ground in plenty of time before the toss with everyone in high spirits (apart from Spewy Dan). With the sun beating down, Coventry's skipper won the toss and decided to bowl. The home team got off to a good start picking up "Puke-ahontas" Dan Candlish - LBW for 0 shouldering arms. Tom Masters was next to go and Shep wasn't too far behind him. The home team were off to a good start.

Sam Llyod (75)and Alex Taylor (47) batted well to rebuild the innings for Wellington - and when Al departed a decent score was on the cards with wickets in hand. James Flynn (56) came to the crease and played his shots straight away. With both Sam and Flynny set they didn't take long to really push for a defendable score. Despite losing Flynn, Wellington set the home team a challenging 228 for victory.

Steve Brooks, playing his last game for the club before returning home led the visitors into the field. It wasn't long before he was into the action either. His first spell earned him 3-15 off seven overs.

With wickets being taken at regular intervals it was important that Wellington kept the standards up in the field.Nobody did this more than James Flynn, who literally put his body on the line for the bowlers when he took a nasty blow to the nether-regions. To his credit, he managed to carry but he found sympathy thin on the ground from his teammates, who couldn't stop laughing at the poor lad's misfortune.

Stubborn resistance from Coventry's Beaufoy (62) frustrated Wellington - but after drinks Martin Weill came on and was straight among the wickets. He picked up two quick ones, both bowled. A smart run-out from Tom Masters tilted the balance back towards Wellington, who were well in control by this stage.

When Weill came back on for his second spell he picked up the vital wicket of Beaufoy and another one straight away to take the game away from the home side! Weill ended up with 4 for 21, all bowled.

With one wicket left skipper Steve Moules brought Brooksy back on to finish the job - and he didn't take long. One ball in fact! He finished with figures of 4 for 15 and led Wellington off after a brilliant team performance.

Skipper Steve Moules said: "Brooksy has been a joy to captain. He always gives his all and is a very disciplined bowler. He is also a very popular member of the side and will be a big loss within the Club as a whole - not just the 2nd team! I wish him well for the remainder of university and his life on and off the cricket field."
