Wellington Go On The Counter Attock

4 months ago By David Ross

The 1st XI won their first league match since April at a baking-hot Orleton Park on Saturday afternoon.

Captain Wendell Wagner won an important toss for the home side and duly chose to bat, subjecting the opposition side Attock to 55 overs in the field. Wellington’s batting card showed healthy contributions all the way down, with Daniel Lloyd (52), Sam Lloyd (41) and Charlie Mackleworth (37*) providing timely knocks. At tea, the home team had posted a score of 240 for 8. Attock lost early wickets and never looked like chasing down their target. Daniel Lloyd (3 for 45) and Samit Gohil (4 for 48) impressed with the ball as Wellington claimed a 77-run victory.

The 2nds didn’t enjoy the same winning feeling as they made the short trip to Newport. Home opener Paul Furniss hit 93 at Audley Avenue as his side went on to post 228 for 7 in 50 overs. There were two wickets each for skipper Martin Weill and seamer George Topper. The hosts’ total was definitely chaseable in what were good batting conditions; however Wellington’s line-up wilted in the heat, making only 111 all out. Opener Sam Topper top-scored with 28 on a disappointing afternoon for the second string.

Back at Orleton Park the 3rd team suffered at the hands of a blistering knock from Llyr Thomas, who hit 118 for Shrewsbury 3rds. He made light work of Wellington’s seemingly competitive total of 229 for 5. Earlier in the piece, Daniel Candlish carried his bat, making 84 not out, and Richard Benting blasted 46 for Wellington. It was all in vain as the visitors knocked that off for the loss of just three wickets.

The 4ths recorded a welcome victory on the road at Albrighton. Batting first, the home side made only 97 on what was a good day for Wellington’s Shehan Gunawardena (4 for 29) and Andy Parkyn (3 for 16). Youngster Matthew Lamb hit an impressive 39 and, with the help of Steve Parry (40*), helped the visitors to a seven-wicket win.

On Sunday, the 5th team were outplayed by a strong Knockin 3rd team, who subjected them to a ten-wicket defeat. Elliott Byram scored 18 of Wellington’s low total of 84 all out. The hosts knocked off that score in just the 11th over to take maximum points.
