Sickener At Smethwick

3 months ago By David Ross

Wellington suffered an agonising last-ball defeat at Smethwick on the first weekend of July.

Wendell Wagner’s side might have fancied their chances chasing down Smethwick’s total of 195 for 8 after Dan Lloyd hit 46 at number three. But a flurry of wickets in the closing stages left the Shropshire side clinging on for a draw in the last over, 27 runs short of victory. There was still time for a sucker-punch, however, with Smethwick claiming the last Wellington wicket on the final delivery of the match. Earlier in the day Wagner claimed three wickets, and Martin Delaney and Jack Shantry two each, but their efforts couldn’t stop their side slipping into the relegation zone.

The 2nd XI match against C&R Hawks at Orleton Park was curtailed by the rain on Saturday evening. Wellington were chasing 202 for victory and found themselves on 115 for 5 with 15 overs remaining when play was suspended. Skipper Martin Weill was unbeaten at the crease on 32 at that point. Prior to that, Matty Simmonds hit 33 on his return from injury and Owais Abdul claimed two for 48 off his 12 overs before the points were shared.

League leaders Pontesbury proved too hot for the 3rd team to handle in their home fixture, posting 259 for 5 in their 45 overs. There was consolation for opener Dan Pitchford in the form of three wickets, but it was another tough afternoon for the Wellington bowlers. The hosts’ run-chase dissipated after the dismissal of opener Warwick Vaughan for 33. Pontesbury won the match comfortably, dismissing their opposition for just 120.

Kumar Singh (4 for 15) and Adam Lloyd (4 for 12) proved a potent combination in the 4th team’s win against Pontesbury 2nds. Wellington’s travellers bowled out the home side for 109 in their Reserve Division Two fixture. Captain Simon Topper (45*) and star performer Lloyd (40) helped their side to a comfortable three-wicket win after tea.

In Sunday’s only match the 5th team travelled to face Frankton at the neutral ground of Ellesmere College. On the day, Frankton’s total of 193 proved a match-winning one despite the bowling successes of Jason Whitley (3 for 19) and Adam Byram (4 for 22). Responding to that score, Adrian Casey scored 33 at the top of the order and Bryam and son Elliott both hit 24. However, Wellington lost the match by 43 runs after being bowled out in the 35th over.
