Wellington Girls Storm To Victory

The U13 Girls reigning champions did not disappoint on Monday against Shifnal.

Match report by Dave Blocksidge

Having triumphed against their ladies team on Friday it was the turn of our younger girls to pit their wits against our friends from Shifnal on Monday evening and the reigning champs did not disappoint with a sparkling win.

Put in to bat first on a glorious summers evening our skipper Ellie Blocksidge opened with debutant Beth McGowan but things seemed to be going wrong early on with Beth and then Sarah Hide both bowled to leave us struggling at 7 for 2. However, these girls are made of stern stuff and the heroine from our last game Rachel McGowan came to the crease to steady the ship. Ellie and Rachel began hitting the gaps and taking quick singles to get us in our stride then opened up to start peppering the boundary. Ellie anchored the innings by batting for over an hour and reaching 22 retired at more than a run a ball. Rachel also played superbly to also retire at 20.

The rest of our batting line up the came to the party too with Dominique next in and hitting a great 14, including two fours before a mix up led to a run out. County Under 11 star Ellie Micklewright was next up and was in fantastic form driving and pulling 4 boundaries in a quickfire 21 which also brought a retirement.

Next up, and with license to go for it with runs on the board, our all action wickie Julia Hasenauer looked like causing some real carnage and set the tone by smashing her first ball for 4 until County player Alanah Dirkin bowled her - much to Julia's frustration.

This brought Rachel Eatough and young Amy Griffiths to the crease and saw Rachel play in a really positive manner. On her way to a fabulous 17 just when we needed it Rachel hit two fours with top shots before falling to the penultimate ball of the innings to bring the skipper back in for one ball which was nearly spanked for four but for an outstretched Shifnal boot. Amy also played really nicely, as she has since she came into the team, and faced 26 balls for her 5 not out. Well done Amy.

Final score 164 for 5

So with a great total on the board we backed ourselves to close out the win and spoke between innings about being ruthless and ensuring we bowled to our highest standards.

With Ellie bringing on Beth and 'Curly' Hide to open the bowling we set out with our normal tactic of trying to take early wickets and the girls did not disappoint. With County player Keira Lorimer looking dangerous early on we began to wonder if the task could be tougher than we thought but step forward Curly to dismiss Keira with a stunning caught and bowled, taking the return difficult return catch in almost casual fashion. That was quickly followed with the two Ellie's combining to dismiss the dangerous Hope Bourton, great catch from Ellie B to give Ellie M the wicket.

This was quickly followed by Rachel M getting amongst the wickets again by superbly bowling Kiana Roberts. This clatter of wickets lead to Shifnal falling a long way behind the required run rate of 8 an over and a run out and a wicket for the skipper, bowling Alanah for a decent 10 compounded the problems for Shifnal.

Rachel and Amy then bowled two tight overs each to keep us well on top and heading for victory.

The final wicket fell to an unfortunate hit wicket to give Rachel M her second wicket of the night and the victory was ours.

So a great win on the night with a solid all round performance. That’s 3 wins out of 3 in our quest to retain the County title. Keep it going girls and let's keep being ruthless. Thanks for your efforts we are very proud of you all. And thanks as ever for the support from parents and grandparents. We really appreciate it.
