Shifnal Defeat Leaves Wellington In Peril

3 months ago By David Ross

Wellington’s search for the victory that would secure their Birmingham League Division One place for next season goes on.

Wendell Wagner won the toss at Shifnal Cricket Ground and elected to bat against their local rivals - but his side were in trouble from the off, slumping to 27 for 4. From that position, Wellington mounted a recovery of sorts to post 136 all out. Dan Lloyd top-scored for the visitors with 29 - but his side’s total was decidedly sub-par. Jack Shantry reduced Shifnal to 53 for 4 after taking four early wickets, but his team made no further breakthroughs. In the end, Jack Edwards (86*) marshalled his side to a comfortable six-wicket win.

The 2nd team had a tough afternoon at the hands of runaway league leaders Shrewsbury. Martin Weill’s side posted only 116 all out at Orleton Park, of which opener Matty Simmonds contributed 41. Shrewsbury’s Dan Manders made light work of that total, hitting an unbeaten 61 to steer his team to a nine-wicket win that brought the 2nd XI’s long unbeaten run to a close.

Wellington 3rds also faced their counterparts from Shrewsbury on Saturday, but fared significantly better after a strong batting display. Steve Pitchford (61) and Daniel Candlish (58) both hit half-centuries to propel their side to 262 for 9 at the Unison ground. After tea the visitors had to stay patient in search of the ten wickets needed to win the match. They were eventually rewarded as Owais Abdul (5 for 30) inspired his side to a crucial 142-run win which boosts their chances of avoiding relegation from Shropshire Division Two.

Meanwhile, Simon Topper’s 4th team have their eyes fixed on the other end of the table after a 150-run win over Albrighton 2nds. Matt Earley (84*) and Will Lewin (38*) enjoyed an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 114 to help their side to a first-innings total of 216 for 4 at Orleton Park. Shehan Gunarwardena took 3 for 15, whilst veterans Kumar Singh and Andy Parkyn took two wickets each as Albrighton collapsed to 66 all out. The victory leaves the 4th team 34 points clear at the top of Shropshire Reserve Division Two with three games left to play.
